Lindsay Buckingham-Under the Skin Tour
Brian Wilson once told me he preferred the intimate settings of a theater over the big outdoor gigs that the Beach Boys play. In some cases I can agree. One of them is in the case of Lindsey Buckingham, frontman of Fleetwood Mac. After a whirlwind tour of arenas playing to thousands of sold out fans, it was refreshing to see him in the intimate setting of The Fox Theater at Foxwoods in October. There is something to be said about taking it down a notch and stripping away the glitz.
And when someone can take away the backup singers, the lights and the full band and still pull it off, that’s a show. Lindsey did just that. Sure there were fewer Fleetwood Mac hits, but no one cared. Songs like “Trouble” and “Go Insane” from Buckingham’s solo 80’s albums shined through acousti****y. Fleetwood Mac numbers like “Second Hand News” and “a rousing awesome kickass version of “Tusk” tended to get the crowd going. Of all the shows I have ever seen at Foxwoods, this was the one with the best audience participation. Clearly Lindsey is a star. His playing (without a guitar pick) is absolutely perfect.
Another funny thing is his new album, “Under the Skin.” It is great. Usually when veteran rock stars (see the Stones) put out a new album, most would rather use it as the opportunity for a bathroom break. Not Lindsey’s new album. The songs sound so fresh and full of life. The crowd pleaser was the poppy “Show You How” which could have been an outtake from any Fleetwood Mac session. Lindsey did a number of new songs to great audience reaction.
Lindsey showed off his guitar and singing chops early in the show with a perfect solo version of “Big Love” but the best moments were near the end. When he launched into the Fleetwood Mac hit “Go Your Own Way” his new band messed up the tempo. It was great to see him stop the band, make a joke and do it over! That showed how fresh the music sounded. He came back with his classic solo hit from the Chevy Chase movie “Vacation” titled “Holiday Road.” That was the best for me. I was 8 years old again watching “Vacation.’ It sounded right on down to the dog barks at the end! You would never get this treat a t a Fleetwood Mac show.
Lindsey took a request from the crowd for the encore. He played what I think is the favorite track he ever wrote. The song is ****ed “Bleed to Love Her” and will transport you. He has released three versions of this song since 1992. One solo, one live and one on the last Fleetwood Mac album. So I think he likes it. And we loved it. His show absolutely rocked and so does his new album. So in this review I would say see the show and buy the album!
